Rubber Paving vs Asphalt — Which Driveway Wins?

Asphalt is cheaper out of the gate. Rubber paving wins on lifespan, looks, and zero resealing. Here's the full breakdown so you can decide what makes sense for your Edmonton home.

Rubber Paving vs Asphalt — Which Driveway Wins?
QUICK ANSWER

TL;DR — When to Choose Each

Choose Asphalt if…

  • You're selling within 5 years (cheap quick fix)
  • You don't mind resealing every 2–3 years
  • You're fine with the standard black-only look

Choose Rubber Paving if…

  • You're staying 7+ years (lower lifetime cost)
  • You hate resealing weekends
  • You want colour, texture, or a low-glare look
  • Slip resistance matters (kids, seniors, pool)
  • You care about recycled content (1 driveway = ~250 reused tires)

What's the Catch with Rubber Paving?

We won't pretend it's perfect. The honest downsides:

  • Higher upfront cost. About 50–60% more than fresh asphalt on day one.
  • Limited installer pool. Not every contractor knows the technique. Bad installs (poor primer, wrong slope) fail early. Always check warranty + portfolio.
  • Heavy oil stains. Same as asphalt — fresh oil should be cleaned within 24 hours. After that it's stuck.
  • Snow plow blade can scuff. Use rubber-tipped blades on snow plows. Metal blades will mark the surface.

Real Edmonton Numbers — One of Our Driveways from 2014

We installed a 750 sq ft rubber driveway in West Edmonton in May 2014. As of 2026:

  • ✅ Zero cracks, zero patching
  • ✅ No resealing — surface still water-shedding
  • ✅ Colour faded ~15% (still looks great)
  • ✅ Total maintenance: $0

An asphalt driveway in the same neighbourhood, installed the same year, has been resealed 4 times and is due for replacement.

Rubber vs Asphalt — FAQ

Is rubber paving cheaper than asphalt long-term?+

Yes — by year 8 the cumulative cost crosses, and over 20 years rubber saves roughly $4,900 on a 600 sq ft driveway in Edmonton (no resealing, no crack repair, no replacement). Day one, asphalt is cheaper.

Will rubber paving crack like asphalt does in Alberta winters?+

No. The poured-in-place rubber is flexible and frost-tolerant. It expands and contracts with the freeze-thaw cycle without cracking. Asphalt is rigid and brittle in cold and cracks readily.

Can I plow snow off rubber paving?+

Yes — use a rubber- or polymer-tipped plow blade or a snow blower. Steel blades will scuff the surface but won't damage the rubber underneath. Most homeowners use a regular shovel without any issue.

Will rubber paving stain from oil leaks?+

Like asphalt, fresh oil should be cleaned within 24 hours with degreaser. Old set-in stains can be lightly resurfaced. Rubber doesn't absorb water-based stains (wine, juice) like concrete does.

Does rubber paving smell like tires?+

For the first 1–2 weeks there's a mild rubber smell, especially in heat. After that it's odourless. Many of our customers say it actually smells less than fresh asphalt.

Is rubber paving good for steep driveways?+

Yes — rubber actually has better grip than asphalt, especially in winter ice. We've done driveways on 15%+ grades in Edmonton with no issue. We'll add anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat for very steep slopes.
